Cosmic Star Ceilings
It has been a long time since we added anything to this blog. The last few months have been an extremely busy time for us at Starz Ceilings - even busier than usual.

The launch of our Superstarz Child Safe, Zero VOC, Glow In The Dark Paint attracted a lot of interest from all over the world. Superstarz is a unique glow in the dark paint, because it is not just LOW VOC, it is NO VOC.

There have been some other very exciting developments in recent weeks, but we are unable say too much more just yet.

The latter part of 2008 was a particularly busy time with some very interesting contracts indeed. We were delighted to be instrumental in the design and implementation of a large star ceiling for one of the fastest growing international music companies in the world. More to follow on this exciting story, as the journey continues.

In September, we were flattered when Feature Writer of The Year, Stacia Briggs, devoted a long article to us in the Norwich Evening News - although we are based in Lancashire, we do travel nationwide to create our ceilings. We had created a Star Ceiling for Stacia and she was delighted with the results. The huge spread that she did on us generated a lot of interest.

You can read more in the google cache of the article, here:

And finally, if you are looking for a unique and unusual Valentine gift, our DIY Star Ceiling Kit, The Cosmos In A Can is the perfect way to show a loved one you care.

Or, why not check out our special limited edition Heart Shaped Glow In The Dark Poster? It will be available shortly in our poster shop, for a limited time only. The poster measures almost 3ft at its tallest point, and will retail at £19.99 including shipping. Order early to avoid disappointment!

And The Winner Is...
Presenting the winning entry in our Cosmos In A Can: paint your own star ceiling contest.

Thank you to everyone who entered - we were overwhelmed with entries, and although there can only be one winner, we felt compelled to choose three runners up in addition to our overall winner, so Steve O Brien from Suffolk, Dave Wills from Argyll And Bute and Joy Beverley from Northumberland will all be receiving a token prize in the post too. You can see some examples of their work below our winning entry.Steve O Brien created a superb black hole effect, and Dave created a nebula that blew us away! The Starry night Joy created was definitely a joy to behold

But our winner is Chris Westall from Essex who created these first two images for us back in August when we launched the contest. We think they are out of this world, and illustrate just what can be achieved with the Cosmos In A Can Kit and a little imagination!

We really loved the swirling galaxy and eclipse! Well done, Chris - a Cosmos In A Can is on its way to you - look out for our next competition, coming soon!

Well done to all our winners and thank you again for all your entries. Keep your photos coming - we love to receive examples of your work.

New Airbrush Paint
Cosmic Ceilings and Airbrushing

Starz Ceilings has recently been involved in the introduction into the markeptplace of the world first SUPERSTARZ glow in the dark paint that has zero VOC and a child safety certificate.

We are now working towards producing the same VOC Free paints that will be suitable for airbrush application.

The dangers of using paints containing VOC are now well documented and all other glow in the dark paints cannot be advertised as being VOC Free unless they have been tested and certified.

Airbrushing creates additional dangers when using paints containing VOC and it is for this reason that we will be striving towards creating a VOC Free Glow In The Dark Airbrush Paint.

World First IS Here!
Well, today is launch day of our world innovation SUPERSTARZ paints. This day has been a long time in coming, and so it is an exciting (if daunting!) day for us. Please take a look at our press release (below) and let us know what you think! The paints will be available to buy from our shop shortly...

PRESS RELEASE

August 26th 2008

For Immediate Release

First Ever Totally Safe Glow Paint is Launched in the UK

This week sees the UK launch of Superstarz, a ground-breaking new Glow in the Dark paint from interior decorating specialists Starz Ceilings (www.starzceilings.co.uk) working in conjunction with Superstars Ceilings. The paint is a world-first in terms of safety and following rigorous testing has been deemed 100% safe for use by both adults and children alike. Taking more than a year to develop the Superstarz Glow in the Dark paints are seen as a major step forward in paint technology.

The launch comes just days after the department store Harrods were forced to recall hundreds of souvenir teddy bears after tests found potentially harmful levels of formaldehyde, just one of an increasing number of chemicals and lead compounds being found in products causing them to be removed from the market.

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are harmful to everyone and are generated from cleaning fluids, furnishings, carpets and paints. They can be extremely damaging to the environment and paint ranks as one of the top contributors of this type of indoor pollution. There has been extreme concern over the very high exposure we have whilst painting or using solvents. Superstarz paint is zero VOC’s and has been developed by a leading scientist whose life’s work has focused on Glow in the Dark technology. Now for the first time ever a glow in the dark paint is available that is totally safe and free of any formaldehyde. Important to note is that the new Superstarz paint is fully compliant to EU toy safety regulations EN71 part 3. The paint is also beneficial to asthmatics and sufferers of allergies.

Superstarz paint comes in four colours: blue, violet, green and aqua. The paint is primarily used to transform a children’s bedroom ceiling to a truly amazing out-of-this-world cosmic night sky scene. The paint is charged by daylight, UV and artificial light and appears invisible with a milky white appearance in the daytime.

At night time however the paints glows for up to 12 hours. Ceilings painted with Superstarz paint have been proven to help children sleep. “I am delighted now that Benjamin sleeps not only with the light off but also with his door shut. This is something I thought we would never achieve, but now he cannot wait to see his ceiling.” Said one happy parent.

A 60ml pot of Superstarz costs just £15.99 (including postage and packing). The company have also produced a complete DIY kit, Starz ‘Cosmos in a Can’. The kit enables anyone to create their own cosmic ceiling at a fraction of the cost of having a professionally created cosmic ceiling, and includes step-by-step instructions as well as all the materials you need to create incredible effects such as ‘The Black Hole’, ‘The Milky Way’, ‘Shooting Stars’ and ‘Constellations’ in a galaxy of glittering colour. Perfect for children or a romantic gift for a loved one the kit is available at just £49.99 (including postage and packing).

Getting Good Glow!
The other day we got an enquiry from a customer who had bought several of our posters, and wanted to get the maximum glow possible from them.

After allowing them to soak up lots of light on a sunny day, she was anticipating great things when it got dark (and rightly so!).

However, when it did get dark, she discovered that the effect was hard to see...How disappointing! Why had this happened? And what could she do?

The solution was very simple...

Cosmic star posters (and cosmic star ceilings) work by soaking up daylight during the day and, when fully charged, they release that light when it starts to get dark. In the summertime, when it gets dark very gradually, as it does in this part of the world, the effect can sometimes be fainter. The best way to explain it is that the paint is gradually releasing the light it has collected as it gradually goes dark, so when it finally does go fully dark, the light being emitted is much lower because the poster has already been releasing the light stored for a number of hours.

Additionally, the room will need to be as dark as possible to get the full effect - if light is coming into the room either from streetlighting or another light source, the effect will be diminished.

In order to combat this summertime problem (obviously in the winter it goes darker at a much faster rate) we suggest the following:

When the room is in complete darkness, turn on the bedroom lighting and allow the poster to soak up the artificial light for about 15 minutes. Then turn off the light and the poster should be fully charged and will now release the light over the next few hours - the effect that you see should be much brighter!

And did it work?

"Yes! I tried it and it worked much better, the pictures are lovely!"

Another happy customer!
